Environmental radioactivity has been continuously monitored in Switzerland since 1956. At that time, the increase in radioactivity due to above-ground nuclear weapons testing prompted the authorities to set up a network for control measurements. Since 1986, the monitoring of ionising radiation as well as radioactivity in the environment has been a statutory mandate of the FOPH. On this basis, the FOPH draws up an annual sampling and measurement program.
In this task, the FOPH relies on cooperation with partners from the federal administration, cantons and universities.
The Radiation Protection Ordinance also requires the FOPH to publish the results of radioactivity measurements in an annual report. This is arranged by topic and contains in-depth explanations, discussions and interpretations. A large part of the measurement results is also presented on the platform radenviro.ch, which supplements the printed annual report.
Almost all participating laboratories write their own contributions for the annual report. The FOPH collects these and takes care of the layout.
