Le messager suisse : revue des communautés suisses de langue française
Access to this journal is made possible in cooperation with the Swiss National Library NL. The Swiss National Library is a cooperative partner of E-Periodica.
Founded in 1954 under the name Le Messager Suisse de Paris, the magazine was successively called Le Messager Suisse de France, then Le Messager Suisse before being renamed Suisse magazine.
It was initially managed by its founder, Elsa Franconi Poretti, then by Nelly Silvagni-Schenk, the Parisian correspondent of the Swiss publishing house Ringier, then by Pierre Jonneret, the former President of the Fédération des Sociétés Suisses de Paris FSSP. Since 1999, it has been under the direction of Philippe Aliaume, former President of the Groupe d'Etudes Helvétiques de Paris and the Association Franco-Suisse des Centraliens.
Swiss magazine was the model for the creation of Swiss Review, which he then edited and distributed in the French-speaking world. As the financial resources made available to Swiss Review by the Confederation became more substantial, it became independent and is sometimes seen as a competitor.
Suisse magazine has always lived exclusively from subscriptions, advertising and private funds. It suspended publication in November 2016.
As the last survivor of the independent Swiss press abroad, Suisse magazine was intended to be politically neutral. It gave a vote to any party that so desired, in accordance with the principle of pluralism. As with the various controversies (banking secrecy, Jewish money, army, etc.), it took a stand on the defence of Switzerland. It dealt with every issue insofar as it concerned French-Swiss relations or the lives of the Swiss abroad. Suisse Magazine was aimed at the entire French-speaking world, with subscribers in Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, Oceania, Africa and Asia, among others.
It appeared monthly or bimonthly, depending on the period, and had published almost 20'000 pages over more than six decades, providing a rich encyclopaedic and iconographic background on tourism, history, literature and important current events in Switzerland.
