"L'Afrique explorée et civilisée", a monthly newspaper founded in 1879 by Gustave Moynier, one of the founders of the Red Cross, is a valuable source for the history of African colonisation. The journal is managed by its founder and written by Charles Faure, secretary-librarian of the Geneva Geographical Society. The publication's goal is described in the introduction to the first issue. "so we thought it useful to create a publication, in French, informing all those interested in this part of the world whether their point of view is that of the geographer, merchant, naturalist, industrialist, economist, ethnographer, philanthropist or Christian".
